The Legend of Chinese Valentine's Day

The Valentine Shop Journal·4 min read

Qixi, sometimes called Chinese Valentine's Day, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month and carries a legend of its own — the story of a cowherd and a weaver girl, separated by the heavens, allowed to reunite just once a year.

The weaver girl, a celestial being, fell in love with a mortal cowherd. When the heavens discovered the match, they were torn apart and placed on opposite sides of the Milky Way. Moved by their devotion, the gods allowed them one night a year to cross a bridge of magpies and be together again.

One night a year, love crosses any distance.

Today, Qixi is celebrated with gifts, letters, and quiet romantic gestures — a reminder, much like our own February holiday, that devotion is worth honoring even across distance and time.
